A month with Earthbound trilogy.

Wed Jul 15, 2009, 12:53 PM
It's been soooo very long since last time I uploaded something...

It's all because of two things.
One, my thesis project is killing me.
Two, I had the oh so great idea of playing through all 3 Earthbound/Mother games...

In the past, I wasn't too fond of this franchise. I had played Earthbound (Mother 2) for the SNES 10 years ago, and I thought it was an "ok game" .... boy was I WRONG!

So, not too long ago I decided to get into this "Mother" business, and I decided to do it properly, by playing through the very first game.

Mother 1/Earthbound Zero:
What got in the way was... well... the terribly plain battle system with a black background.
But it turns out, after I dealt with it, I uncovered a beautiful, rare gem of a game!

Absolutely adored the music. Loved the character development (although things struck me as kinda rushed sometimes.. like the scene with Ninten and Paula.. you know which one I mean). ;)

Decent challenge, no frustrating puzzles, but ackward random encounter.

In short, it was a beautiful game I'm glad I spent my time with.

Mother 2/Earthbound:
Everything that there's to say about this game has already been said, so I'll keep it simple...

One day, I woke up, turned on the game, and played it all day long, until I went to sleep.

THAT good! So many GOOD parts in this game, there'd be no end to the list! Zombies, aliens, anything that can make a good game is there! Great plot, great characters, GREAT music. Bla bla bla...

I take back what I said about this game being boring. I don't have the face to say that again after playing through it 12 hours straight!

Mother 3:
Everything was so good so far... Mother 3, though, kinda broke the pace. After an epic Mother 2, Mother 3 was the oddball of the bunch.

There's a long list of good things and bad things, but I'll keep it short.

The first minutes of Mother 3 were kinda like this:

"Hey you, watch out behind you!" *Ridiculously hard boss fight*
*finally wins*
"Let's go over there! ... Oh will you look at that!" *Boss fight*
*finally wins*
"We have to get back to town before..." *boss fight*
"Oops, wrong way, it was actually *BOSS FIGHT!*

And they were all TOO HARD! I found myself using up every last PP and every last item in order to win with one character left standing. A little TOO hardcore if you ask me. :P But ok. It also takes a LOT of time until you get to use Lucas, the MAIN character of the game.

The game itself was pretty cool. Some parts were boring (the Salsa chapter...) but overall, the story was entertaining and the characters are colorful. I enjoyed it pretty much... until I beat it.

Words can't describe how I felt when I saw the ending. It was a mix between disappointment and anger.
It was a shame that while this game constantly swayed from good parts and bad parts, the last "needle" this game pulled out, awakened the "EVIL dark dragon" inside me.

While I LOVE Mother/Earthbound now, Mother 3's ending left a bitter taste in my mouth.. It's a good game, has it's ups and downs, but the ending is absolutely the WORST. I swear I kinda wished for it to be all nothing but a dream, instead of what I saw, and that's saying a lot.

Oh well, at least I enjoyed the three games. Maybe I need to give Mother 3 another chance.. but... fat chance. The game is TOO hard. As a whole, the franchise is unique and a rich gaming experience. I'm glad I spent a whole month playing it. It was wrong of me to diss the franchise before. But it was all one big satisfying experience. :D

I thought this would never happen to me... but... I've become a Mother/Earthbound fan. @.@

... so I guess... Mother fan art can be included in my Gallery. ñ_ñ;
(The ME from the past is boiling in anger).

you're right. the games are great. i really didn't mind mother 3 though, i just thought it was the darkest of the three. Anyway, i'm looking forward to your pics. keep up the good work.

"it's a beautiful day, now watch some asshole fuck it up!"

"Quick! To the idiot-mobile!"

"I found Jesus! He was hiding behind the couch the whole time."

The last needle dose not awaken an evil dragon, it awakens a good one. It rebuilds the already destroyed world and returns things to the way they once were. The world was already destroyed before the game even began, the dragon just puts it back together. Of course, the island you are on is nailed directly to the dragon, so it was destroyed when he woke up. Also, Ana is the girls name from Mother one, Paula is from mother 2/Earthbound.

hahahaha you didn't catch my drift.

I associated every good experience in the game with Lucas pulling the needle, and every bad experience with Claus pulling it.

Because the metaphorical "last needle" to me was the ending (and it kinda sucked) it's as if Claus pulled the last needle of the game, thus awakening the evil dragon in ME (meaning I was angry at more bad experiences than good ones in the game).

In short, I was a bit more disappointed than glad of Mother 3 as a whole. :P

And yeah, my mistake on Paula in Mother 1. XD

Ok, my mistake then, but I still don't see how the ending is bad. How is putting the world back together a bad thing? How is it bad that it renewed all life on the planet? I just don't understand whats so bad about it, and this journal is kinda lacking an explanation regarding that. It's ok if you didn't like it, but I'm still curious as to why.In any case, you have your opinion, I have mine, and I will agree to disagree.

For once, having had a blast through the other two games, I immediately noticed something. No Gygias, no aliens, nothing. That was points off.

There are many RPGs out there with epic endings about putting the world back together, or saving it, and it involved showing a lot more than the world being teared apart.

I mean if you hadn't told me right now, I assumed I had unleashed the 2nd apocalypse!

Then the whole walk in the dark thing was kinda pointless.. and got annoying. I could've at least settled with everybody saying goodbye to Lucas.

Maybe it's just a matter of taste, but I like to know, after the end, what's going to happen to the characters. If the world had changed, I wanted to know exactly how. Showing screens of the world in flames isn't exactly how I picture a decent ending..

It was lacking and depressing, and I bet if there was a "bad" ending to this game, they would use the exact same animation as in the good ending. Because you can't really tell (besides New Pork City sinking).

Well, I hope I made it clear. ^^ Maybe I've been spoiled by other RPGs... but not reaching out too far, Mother 2 was the very definition of epic. The ending was at least satisfying, even if it ends in a cliffhanger. :P

Ok, fair enough. Gaigas of course wouldn't be in it since he was killed off in 2, but I'm glad they continued the story with Pokey/Porky being the main villain. I think the point of not showing you the world in the end was for you to use your imagination. Also, I have never played a RPG ware the world has already been destroyed before the game starts. Chrono Trigger doesn't count since the "end of the world" hasn't technically happened yet, but will happen. FF6 has a destroyed world of sorts near the middle of the game (closer to the end actually). Illusion of Gaia comes close, but the world wasn't really destroyed, just changed almost beyond recognition. To be fair though, despite RPGs being my favorite genre, I haven't played vary many. Oh, almost forgot about Golden Sun, still haven't finished the second game on that one.

Haha, yeah. I accepted the fact that Gaigas wouldn't appear because he was dead already.

Anyway, the game was good. Maybe didn't end how I hoped it would, but still. Good times, and awesome music, and FUNKY MONKEY DANCE! XD

I think my RPG needs have been satisfied now. Oh wait, I still got M&L:Partners in Time to finish.. And then wrap the whole RPG genre with Golden Sun DS.

RPGs take a lot of time to beat, so that'll probably be my last one. :P Too bad I never really got too much into Phantasy Star...

No I think I'll take on competitive fighting games now. :D
